I recently asked a friend of mine which beaches in the country are her favorites. My thoughts immediately went to the South Pacific, where the coastline feels like stepping straight into a jungle movie, or to the Caribbean coast, where palm trees almost touch the ocean. Then there’s the North Pacific coast, known for its more stable weather and tropical dry forest landscape.
She told me that the best beaches are in Guanacaste. She said that the sunsets there are on another level, especially along the wide, endless beaches on the northern coast of the Nicoya Peninsula. That sense of freedom, the uninterrupted horizon and the raw beauty of the waves—create something truly special. And further north, where the sea becomes calmer, the landscape feels even more diverse. There’s simply something for everyone.

I completely agreed with her. There’s a reason why Guanacaste is so highly visited—and why visitor numbers keep rising every year. With Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia and direct flights from various countries, the region is incredibly accessible. It makes traveling easy and allows visitors to explore the many different parts of the Nicoya Peninsula without much effort.
The weather
Guanacaste has two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry period usually lasts from December to March, with only about 4% of the annual precipitation falling during these months. April is considered a transition month, before the rains truly set in from May to August, which account for around 50% of the yearly rainfall.
June is typically the first peak month for rain, while July and August bring the Pacific veranillo, a short break in rainfall accompanied by stronger trade winds. The second rainy period lasts from September to November, slowly transitioning back into the dry season.
That said, the months with the most rain are usually September and October. Even then, mornings are often beautiful and sunny, with rain showers tending to arrive in the afternoon. From December to April (and in some years even into May), there is often no rain at all. This makes it ideal for planning activities—but the deeper you move into the dry season, the landscape becomes less green and can even feel a bit desert-like.
But the beaches remain absolutely stunning.

Playa Carillo
Located just 10 minutes south of Sámara, this beach stands out for its beauty. It has white sand, calm waters and palm trees lining the entire shoreline. Easily accessible by car with free parking available, Playa Carrillo is a favorite among visitors.
There are free public showers and picnic tables, making it easy to enjoy food and drinks brought from home. Awarded the Bandera Azul Ecológica, Playa Carrillo is considered one of the cleanest and most eco-friendly beaches in the country.

Playa guiones
Nosara’s most popular beach, Playa Guiones is perfect for year-round surfing. This 7 km stretch of beach is a favorite among those looking for consistent waves and great amenities.
The surrounding beach town offers a wide range of restaurants and activities such as yoga. With three main access points, the beach is easy to reach, and watching the sunset has become a daily ritual for both locals and visitors.

Playa Avellanas
Playa Avellanas is a stunning white-sand beach located about 30 minutes south of Tamarindo. This laid-back beach is a perfect alternative to the busier tourist towns in the area. Additionally Playa Avellanas offers around eight distinctive surf spots, suitable for both beginners and advanced surfers.
Right on the sand, you’ll find the beachfront restaurant Lola’s, where you can enjoy delicious food and refreshing drinks.. Another highlight is the wooden boardwalk in the mangrove forest, that allows visitors to observe the animals.

Playa Langosta
If you are staying in Tamarindo, this is the beach to go to. It’s located right next to Playa Tamarindo in the tranquil neighborhood of Langosta. This gorgeous beach stands out for its charming shoreline with tide pools and all-day shade from bushes and trees.
As a result to no be directly accessible by car, Playa Langosta is less visited and feels more remote than busy Playa Tamarindo. Also there is a surf spot at the river mouth in front of Hotel Occidental Tamarindo, offering fun waves throughout the year.

Playa Grande
Located about 30 minutes by car from Tamarindo, this beach stands out for its long, wide stretch of sand. Together with its northern section, Playa Ventanas, the coastline extends for almost 5 km from one end to the other—perfect for long beach walks.
Playa Grande is part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park, which protects the nesting grounds of the giant leatherback turtles. The beach is also well known for its consistent surf conditions along the entire shoreline. The main surf break is located in front of Taco Star, while slightly easier surf spots can be found near Palm Beach Estates.
Additionally Playa Grande sits directly across the estuary from Tamarindo, and a small water taxi makes it easy to travel between the two towns.

Playa Flamingo
Very easy to access, Playa Flamingo is an upscale and beautiful beach located about 40 minutes from Tamarindo. Thanks to the road running parallel to the beach, you can park your car and choose the spot you like most.
Almost the entire stretch of the beach is lined with bushes and trees that provide a very welcome natural shade. With several restaurants located just behind the beach, it’s easy to grab a drink and enjoy the sunset. The new Flamingo Marina, only a 10-minute walk away, offers a wide range of shops and dining options.
For these reasons it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica for us.

Playa Penca
A stunning and somewhat hidden beach located in Potrero, about 50 minutes by car from Tamarindo. Playa Potrero features white sand, a few shaded areas, and calm waters that are ideal for swimming or snorkeling.
A spacious parking lot at the entrance makes the beach easy to access. The town of Potrero offers a wide range of dining options—perfect for enjoying a meal after a relaxing day at the beach.
This beach is certainly one of the best beaches in Guanacaste that everyone should visit at least once.

Playa danta
Playa Danta is located in the beach town of Las Catalinas and is open to the public. About one hour by car from Tamarindo, this beautiful beach is perfect to combine with a visit to Las Catalinas.
Take a stroll along the shoreline, swim in the calm waters, or rent a SUP to explore the surroundings. After some time on the water, discover one of the many food options in town or simply wander through the charming, walkable streets.
Please note that the parking lot is located outside of town, and you’ll need to walk to reach the beach and restaurants. Ending the day with a drink at the bar at Casa Chameleon is the perfect treat after a beach day.

Playa Cabuyal
This beach is located on the Papagayo Peninsula, about 35 minutes by car from Guanacaste Airport. We love Playa Cabuyal because it feels truly remote. There is barely any phone signal here and even the drive already feels like part of the adventure.
With its white sand and long stretch of beach Playa Cabuyal makes for a perfect day trip for families. On the right-hand side, just offshore, you can spot Witch’s Rock, a famous rock formation that marks one of Costa Rica’s iconic surf spots.
